Original Painting 15" x 30" on Gallery Canvas
Gaia is the 4th effort in my Gods & Monsters series, meant as a compliment to my Green Man.
In Greek Mythology, She is the Ancestral Mother and the personification of all life on earth.
She has many variations throughout history in many cultures.
She was the Incan fertility Goddess Pachamama (or Earth Mother). She was also the Goddess Kokyangwuti, for the Hopi Indians (also known as the Spider Grandmother), and the Hindu Goddess Prithvi, ('the Vast One').
Gaia has three aspects: Maid, Mother and Crone, representing the life cycles inherent in all things. She is a holy-trinity concept predating more modern takes on the idea, and was brought to Europe from ancient India by Mycenaean tribes roughly 2000 years BCE. -But she is older than even that!
Gaia is regarded to have have peaked in influence somewhere between 700 BCE and the 9th Century AD.
Statues of Gaia have been excavated dating back through prehistory, and She is named in Sanscrit, in the Old Indian Vedas and the Upanishads, as 'Gaya'.
This piece is my take, on one of the many aspects of Mother Nature.
